Longshadow New Music Festival

From Carmen Braden, Black Ice Sound

The inaugural Longshadow New Music Festival will be held in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories on June 14 - 16, 2019.
Held near the summer solstice, when the sun only sets for a short time, the Longshadow New Music Festival celebrates the music of the 20th and 21st Centuries, in particular the music of Canadians. This first year of the Festival focuses on percussion and big band jazz!

Ideas about improvisation, composition, performance, collaboration, the soundscape, acoustic ecology, field recording will be explored during the Festival. Carmen Braden’s music company Black Ice Sound will be organizing the festival, with Carmen leading as Artistic Director.

Two concerts at NACC will feature guest ensembles and instrumentalists from Alberta, local performers, and a world premiere composition by NWT fiddler Wesley Hardisty performed by Andrea Bettger. Two soundwalks will allow participants to explore the soundscape of Yellowknife’s old town at two different times - under the midnight sun and the noonday sun.

Two free workshops will allow community musicians and interested audience members to explore improvisation, composition, and contemporary music.
